I turned 49 on Thursday, but I don't mind if the reader overlooked it; sometimes I forget I have one as well

Usually a milestone is something that is widely recognized as a pat moment or place in one's life, like turning fifty. Not this year though, as this is another milestone reached in life, one that another wasn't able to reach if we were born the same year: my dad didn't live long enough to reach forty nine years old, dying weeks shy due to his own bout with lung cancer.

The only milestone he witnessed was when I graduated high school, this was a happy time for dad as he dropped-out in the late forties shortly before the Korean conflict. When I graduated (something I barely remember for reasons I won't get into,) one couldn't find a happier man than my father that night as I was handed that diploma, I did something that he didn't get to do. Unfortunate it didn't last more than a year and a half though, as his death in February of '81 kept him from seeing his youngest daughter grow up, or even enjoy having grandchildren around.
Or even giving automotive repair advice to his oldest son trying to keep an old Poncho on the road. Those kind of things that he would have no problem with if things been different.

Had he lived he would be 77 right now.
